SIMON V. ANDERSON, PH.D. (1931-2016)
Dr. Simon Anderson taught at the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music for 41 years, retiring in 2005. While there, his music appreciation and jazz-pop music history classes were always filled to capacity. Dr. Anderson founded Clifton Hills Press in 1982 as a way to publish textbooks for these popular classes, and The Musical Imperative and Pop Music USA have been used in over 50 universities, colleges, and high schools nationwide. He was a frequent convention speaker and offered libretto previews each summer for the Cincinnati Opera. He also presented several "Classical Conversations" before concerts of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. On Saturday nights, he could usually be found at a piano, fronting a jazz combo or serving as a sideman for a big band. On Sunday morning, he served five local church congregations as music director, many of which sang his original music, including five choral cantatas, as part of their ministry.
